BMW shows off 'touch-less' touchscreen

Munich, Germany - At the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (6 to 9 January) in Las Vegas, BMW is presenting a Vision Car to demonstrate what the interior and the user interface of the future might look like.
One particular example in networked vehicles is provided by AirTouch. This feature controls the entertainment, satnav and communication functions using simple gestures made by the driver's hand.
AirTouch allows the display in a vehicle to be operated like a touchscreen without actually having to make contact with the surface.
How it works
Sensors record hand movements in the area between the central console and the interior mirror. This enables drivers or passengers to change the focus on the surface of the panoramic display.
3D control of your dashboard
In 2015, BMW presented its new gesture control at the CES. This enables simple movements of a finger to carry out actions such as adjusting the loudness or answering phone calls. Meanwhile, this technology is available as BMW Gesture Control in the new BMW 7 Series (We're driving the new 7 Series in South Africa in January 2016, Ed).
BMW says AirTouch is taking another leap forward, with sensors installed in the area of the instrument dashboard which respond to hand movements here and therefore permit three-dimensional control.
AirTouch has another option to confirm an action. A concealed AirTouch button is located along the rim of the steering wheel.
Located on the left and easy to reach with the thumb, and it lights up when a menu or icon can be activated.
One press is sufficient to activate the desired program or change a setting. The passenger also has a similar button positioned along the side-sill. Passengers are can use one hand to navigate through the menu and the other to confirm inputs.
Activates phone pad
The intelligent AirTouch menu control reduces the number of steps needed to make a selection. For example, when activating the phone pad, the system automatically brings up contacts or call lists so that a call can be made with one action.
AirTouch recognises which selection and control steps are required next and displays them in advance. BMW says this allows the driver to focus all their concentration on the road ahead or offers additional convenient control options when the vehicle is travelling in highly automated mode.

News/ The Royals Recap: Prince Liam Uncovers What Domino Means, Queen Helena Bonds With Princess Eleanor for Her Birthday and Mo

The Royals 207 E!
Secrets are being revealed!
Sunday night's crazy and dramatic episode of The Royals finally exposes the true meaning behind Domino and its mysterious symbol and it is mind-blowing. And while we already know Lucius didn't murder King Simon, more clues are uncovered to decipher why the real killer decided to put him and Prince Robert six feet under. Is your head spinning yet?
On the flip side, Queen Helena discards her armor in a touching moment to have an honest conversation with Princess Eleanor and warn her not to repeat her past mistakes in love.
Recap the latest episode (and all the lies and shocks) with these 14 major moments!

WATCH: Princess Eleanor tells Jasper she's sick of him and his games

The Royals 207 E!
1. King Cyrus tells Violet how he truly feels: Can it be? Is King Cyrus in love? It certainly seems so. The reigning monarch tells his lady he loves her during pillow talk in bed. The revelation takes her by surprise and she asks him to clarify. "Yes, I love you," he says. "I'm 45 years old. I know what my feelings are. This tyrant is in love you." Violet, unfortunately, doesn't reciprocate his sentiments and remains quiet. At least she didn't respond with the classic, "Thank you."
The Royals 207 E!
2. Prince Liam searches for the unknown cocktail waitress from his birthday party: After asking Jasper to comb over the security footage from the eventful night before, Liam finally recognizes the anonymous blonde who put the Domino necklace on him. They find Holden to get some answers from the cocktail waitress he hooked up with who also worked the party. She admits she can't remember the girl's name, but says she was really into tattoos. Jasper presses her for something more specific. "Only her ink," she responds. "I asked her where she got it done." She tells them the location of the parlor and Jasper and Liam set off to follow the lead.
3. Queen Helena takes Princess Eleanor out for a mother-daughter day: After her encounter with Captain Alistair Lacey, Helena has a change of heart and decides to focus on spending more time with her children. She wakes Eleanor up and takes her to the stables to ride for her birthday. "People are always telling me what an ungrateful, spoiled little brat you are," she tells her daughter. "You have been given all the material things in life. That's true. But perhaps I should have given you more of myself."
Helena reveals that her birthday gift this year is quality mother-daughter time. "So you got me nothing?" Eleanor asks. LOL! "Shut up, Princess," the Queen responds. "Let's ride!"
The Royals 207 E!
4. Ted Pryce receives a cryptic letter from Domino: When the Head of Palace Security receives a letter from Domino with an address, he finds himself at the house of the unidentified man who previously accused him of murdering King Simon at the museum. "How did I figure it out?" he goads Ted. "I'm a student of human nature," he says, answering his own question. "I saw the fear in your eyes when I said you killed the King." Ted doesn't confirm the accusations, but he doesn't deny them either. Is this an admission of guilt? Yikes!

China Telecom chairman Chang Xiaobing under investigation

The chairman of one of China's largest state-owned mobile operators, China Telecom, is being investigated by the country's anti-corruption watchdog.
Chang Xiaobing is "suspected of serious violation of discipline", according to a statement on the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection website.
The executive was reported missing by local media on Sunday.
He is the latest in a series of high-profile executives to become embroiled in Beijing's crackdown on corruption.
The government's ongoing anti-corruption drive resulted in more than 70 senior officials at state firms being investigated in 2014.

Top Chinese executives investigated
  • Jiang Jiemin, former chairman of leading energy group China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) jailed for 16 years in October for graft
  • Xu Jianyi, former chairman of top automaker China FAW Group expelled from the ruling Communist Party in August for embezzling funds and taking bribes
  • Shen Hao, former president of financial media group 21st Century jailed for four years last week for extortion and blackmail
  • Cheng Boming, president of China's largest brokerage, CITIC Securities, under investigation in September for alleged trading on insider information

Little information was given on the investigation involving Mr Chang, but the statement mentioned his position as the former chairman of the country's second-largest mobile operator China Unicom.
The 58-year-old became the chairman at China Telecom in August. Earlier this year, there were reports that the government was considering merging the two telecom giants.
Government scrutiny of the top firms in the world's second largest economy has spread beyond state-owned enterprises.
Earlier this month, Guo Guangchang, the chairman of one of China's largest private conglomerates Fosun International, was also reported to have gone missing, which eventually led the firm to announce that he was helping with a police investigation. He reappeared in public a few days later.
Correspondents say that Beijing's crackdown on corruption is partly about using high profile cases to prove the government is serious about tackling corruption.
But many suspect that the downfall of some executives and other investigations can also be attributed to ongoing political infighting and an attempt to pressure high profile figures to toe the party line.

Japan and South Korea agree WW2 'comfort women' deal

Japan and South Korea have agreed to settle the issue of "comfort women" forced to work in Japanese brothels during World War Two, in their first such deal since 1965.
Japan has apologised and will pay 1bn yen ($8.3m, £5.6m) - the amount South Korea asked for - to fund victims.
The issue has been the key cause for strained ties. South Korea has demanded stronger apologies and compensation.
Only 46 former "comfort women" are still alive in South Korea.

Dozens dead in US Christmas storms

At least 43 people have been killed over the past five days by severe storms across southern and western parts of the United States.
Flash floods, tornadoes and now snow have destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and snarled transport links.
The National Weather Service has issued tornado warnings for Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Mississippi.
The governors of Missouri, Oklahoma, and New Mexico have declared states of emergency.
In Illinois, three adults and two children were swept away in their car by the flood waters. In Texas, at least 11 people were killed by powerful tornadoes with winds of up to 200 miles an hour (300kph).

Hundreds of homes in Texas were reduced to rubble and cars were blown off the road. Five people died in their cars on a highway passing the city of Garland. Pedro Barineau of the local police said they had no chance.
"There were sirens that were going off, I mean multiple times and in multiple areas, notifying people of a tornado. However, people on the highway that were driving through they had no idea that the sirens were going off and the tornado was on them in a matter of seconds," he said.

The winds in the state have scattered mangled cars and other debris for miles. Churches have been destroyed and trees toppled across a 64km (40 mile) area.
"It is total devastation," said Mr Barineau. "It is a very difficult time to be struck by such a horrible storm, the day after Christmas."
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said his office had declared Dallas County and three nearby counties a disaster area. He also warned people to be wary of snow in western parts of the state and of rivers spilling their banks.
Parts of New Mexico, where a state-wide emergency has been declared, are expecting up to 2ft (60cm) of snow. The New Mexico city of Roswell recorded 12.3 inches of snow on Sunday - an area record for a single day.
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency on Sunday in anticipation of blizzard conditions and an ice storm.
The bad weather forced the cancellation of nearly 1,500 flights on Sunday, according to tracking service FlightAware.com. About half of the cancelled flights were in Dallas, a major US flight hub.
While extreme weather in the US around Christmas is not unknown, meteorologists say that unseasonably high temperatures in some areas contributed to the severity of the storms.
The forecast for the eastern US is for high temperatures to continue - Washington DC pushed close to 70F (21C) on Sunday.

Suspected Boko Haram attacks rock Maiduguri At least 15 people killed as armed group launch rocket-propelled grenades and activate suicide bombers in northern city.

Boko Haram have also carried out deadly cross-border raids in neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger [EPA]

At least 15 people have been killed after a series of suspected Boko Haram attacks on the outskirts of Maiduguri in northeastern Nigeria.
Security and local sources told Al Jazeera that Boko Haram fighters led as many as eight female suicide bombers to attack the village of Dawari on Sunday night and early on Monday morning.
According to witnesses, the suicide bombers blew themselves up as soldiers were trying to repel an attack by a group who arrived firing from the back of three trucks and launching rocket-propelled grenades at homes.
Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from Abuja, said: "The Nigerian military is on hot pursuit of the attackers ... as they comb the bushes to try to find whether or not there are more Boko Haram fighters hiding around there."
PR Nigeria, an agency that disseminates government news, reported that Nigerian troops had "intercepted and destroyed" 10 suicide bombers.
"The troops laid ambush on the terrorists' suspected routes... The suicide bombers were intercepted in three different locations approaching the city," PR Nigeria said, quoting the military.
The area is close to Giwa Barracks, a major military base attacked several times in the past by the group. In January 2014, Boko Haram attacked the base and freed hundreds of detainees. Human rights groups allege that Nigeria's military has killed thousands of detainees at this location.

The attack comes just days before president Muhammadu Buhari’s deadline to stamp out the group expires on Thursday.
Nigerian troops have won back territory from Boko Haram, but two attacks launched by the group within the space of three days have called into question Buhari’s claim.
On Christmas Day, Boko Haram attacked the Kimba village in Borno state, killing at least 14 residents and burning down their homes.
The uprising has killed 20,000 people in six years and driven 2.3m people from their homes. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) says that up to one million children have been forced out of school as a result of the instability.
Boko Haram have also carried out deadly cross-border raids in neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Two major explosions rip through Syrian city of Homs At least 32 killed after twin-bombings, the second major attack in the city since ceasefire deal earlier this month.

At least 32 people have been killed and 90 others wounded in two explosions in the Syrian city of Homs, UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The blasts, one from a car bomb and another from a suicide bomber, hit the Zahra district in the middle of the city on Monday, the group said.

Syria's state news agency SANA reported two car bomb blasts, but gave a lower toll of 19 dead and more than 100 wounded.
It was the second major attack in the city since a ceasefire deal took effect earlier this month, paving the way for the government to take over the last rebel-controlled area of Homs.

Twin blasts on December 12, also in Zahra, killed at least 16 people. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed reponsibility for that attack, saying it had detonated a suicide car bomb.

The blasts came as hundreds of fighters and their families were being evacuated from three areas in Syria to Lebanon and Turkey.

Under the Homs ceasefire deal, at least 700 insurgent fighters and members of their families left the last rebel-controlled area of the city, al Waer district, on Monday.

The United Nations oversaw implementation of the deal.

Iraqi army claims key victory over ISIL in Ramadi

Elsewhere, Kurdish forces are reported to have killed several ISIL fighters during a raid in Hawija, a town in Kirkuk province.
The clashes in Hawija occurred on Friday night, the Kurdish Rudaw news agency reported citing police officials.
The report said the raid was launched to free Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers from ISIL captivity but it was not clear whether any were found.
The operation reportedly involved American special forces and left Hussein Umari Assafi, an ISIL commander, dead, but US officials denied any role.
Summer offensive
ISIL captured Hawija during its offensive in the summer of 2014, along with most of western Iraq and parts of Kurdish-controlled territory in the north.
In October, a joint US-Kurdish raid in Hawija  freed about 70 hostages from ISIL, who were purportedly being prepared for execution.
At least six ISIL fighters were arrested in that raid and another 20 killed. A US soldier was killed during the clashes.
ISIL is reported to be holding a large number of Peshmerga soldiers, Iraqi security forces and civilians from minority groups.
It frequently conducts mass executions, which it films for its propaganda purposes.
ISIL also holds hostages for ransom or exchanges them for its own prisoners held by Kurdish security forces.

Japan and South Korea reach deal on wartime sex slaves Tokyo offers $8.7m in compensation for former sex slaves, who were referred to as "comfort women" in wartime Japan.

The deal was reached in Seoul at a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries [Kim Min-Hee/EPA]

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has heralded a "new era" in Japanese - South Korean relations after the two countries reached a landmark deal on the issue of wartime sex slaves.
Under Monday's deal, Japan will finance a 1bn yen aid ($8.7m) fund for the Korean women forced into Japanese military-run brothels during World War II, euphemistically referred to as "comfort women".
"Japan and South Korea will welcome a new era," Abe told reporters after speaking by phone with South Korean President Park Geun-Hye. "Both countries will cooperate together to open" it, he added.
The deal was reached in South Korea's capital Seoul at a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
"The comfort women issue... occurred with the involvement of the Japanese military... and the Japanese government acutely feels its responsibility," Japanese foreign minister Fumio Kishida said after a meeting with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-Se.
Kishida added that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed an "apology and repentance from the bottom of his heart" to the victims.
Yun Byung-se said the agreement was "final and irreversible," as long as Japan faithfully followed through with its promises.
Strained ties
The issue has long been a source of friction between Seoul and Tokyo, with South Korea previously accussing Japanese leaders of repeatedly failing to properly atone for wartime atrocities.
Tens of thousands of women from around Asia, many of them Korean, were sent to front-line military brothels to provide sex to Japanese soldiers.
In South Korea, there are 46 such surviving former sex slaves, mostly in their late 80s or early 90s.

Many survivors of the wartime sexual slavery had urged Japan to issue an official apology, make reparations and include wartime atrocities in Japanese school textbooks.
The US sees North Korea as a key rival in the south east Asian region and hopes to benefit from the strengthening of ties between its two allies, South Korea and Japan.
The two Northeast Asian countries together host about 80,000 U.S. troops and are members of now-stalled regional talks aimed at ending North Korea's nuclear ambitions in return for aid.

War & Conflict Taliban bomber stages attack close to Kabul airport Suicide car bomb near eastern entrance to airport in capital kills one civilian and wounds several othe

At least one Afghan civilian was killed and thirteen wounded, after a suicide car bomb exploded close to an entrance to Kabul's airport, Afghan officials have said.
The attack happened early on Monday morning near the airport's military entrance, which is used by NATO and coalition forces, the Afghan interior ministry said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Reporting from Kabul, Al Jazeera's Abdullah Shahood, said: "We have witnessed an increase in Taliban attacks this year, although it's winter here and normally Taliban attacks decrease during the winter.
"But we have seen quite a number of attacks by the Taliban, in the south of the country and north of the country, even in Kabul."
Zia ul Islam, who witnessed the blast, told Al Jazeera that the "explosion was so loud it shook the ground and broke all the windows of the nearby buildings".
"I am in a state of shock right now. I don't know how am I even alive. I saw many injured civilians crying for help," he said.

READ MORE: Analysis: The Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan

The attack comes a day after Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif, visited Kabul to discuss peace talks with the Taliban.
"Both sides agreed that the first round of dialogue between Afghanistan, Pakistan, US and China will be held in January to lay out a comprehensive roadmap for peace," the Afghan presidential palace said in a statement.
Earlier this month, a suicide bomber attacked a joint Afghan-NATO convoy near Bagram airbase outside Kabul, killing six US soldiers and wounding three others.
Afghan forces are currently battling to push out Taliban fighters who seized large swaths of the key, opium-rich district of Sangin in southern Helmand province.
US President Barack Obama announced in October that thousands of US troops would remain in Afghanistan after 2016, back-pedalling on previous plans to shrink the force and acknowledging that Afghan forces were not ready to stand alone.

Besieged Syria rebels evacuated in rare deal Wounded fighters evacuated with families by bus and ambulance as part of deal that also gives safe passage to civilians.

Beirut, Lebanon: Dozens of wounded rebel fighters, along with members of their families, are being evacuated from a Syrian border town that is besieged by government forces.
The evacuation was agreed as part of a deal that will, in exchange, see the safe passage of scores of civilians from two government-supporting villages that are surrounded by rebels in northern Syria.
Some 126 people - including 70 rebel fighters - who have been under siege in the town of Zabadani, which is in Syria's south near the Lebanese border, will arrive in Beirut airport on Monday.
They will then fly to Turkey under the supervision of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from where they will be transferred to Syria's largely rebel-held Idlib province.
The rebel contingent and their families will travel to Beirut via the Lebanese border crossing al-Masnaa in convoys of buses. Ambulances also entered Zabadani on Monday to transport the seriously wounded.
Sources in Zabadani told Al Jazeera that at least 12 ICRC and UN vehicles had arrived in the town by 8am local time (0500GMT) to take the rebels out.
Opposition-held Zabadani has been subjected to a relentless bombardment for months by government troops, backed by the Shia Lebanese group Hezbollah, in an attempt to take it from the rebels.
The evacuations, an effective swap, come after a negotiated ceasefire deal involving Turkey and the armed group Ahrar al-Sham on one side, and Iran and the Syrian government on the other.
'Unprecedented destruction'
The villages of Fuaa and Kefraya have been under siege by Jaysh el Fateh – a collective of opposition groups that includes Ahrar al Sham and the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front – since March 2015.
Rockets have regularly been launched at the two villages, in which about 4,000 families live.
At the same time as the Zabadani transports, about 336 people - including women and children - were being evacuated from the two Shia villages, which are in Idlib.
Monday’s swap, a rare event in Syria, is considered to be the first phase of a ceasefire deal, brokered in September, to stop the months of fighting in Zabadani.
According to medical sources involved in the operation, the people being transferred from Fuaa and Kefraya have been selected from among those in the village who need urgent treatment.
They are expected to be transported from through the Bab al Hawa border crossing into Turkey. From Turkey, they will travel to Beirut and then on to the Syrian capital Damascus.

"Those who are in urgent need of medical attention will stay in Lebanon until they are able to move again and will then proceed onto Syria," a medical source told Al Jazeera, adding they have been waiting for three months for the deal to be implemented.

Syria deal: 'Population swap' or 'sectarian cleansing?'

The UN in July spoke of "unprecedented levels of destruction and many deaths among the civilian population" in Zabadani caused by barrel bombs dropped by Syrian government planes.
It also voiced concern about the 15,000 civilians in Fuaa and Kefraya, living under the pressure of an opposition advance.
In October, the Red Cross delivered eight trucks of food and aid to the towns, while simultaneously sending similar trucks to Zabadani and and nearby Madaya.

FW De Klerk criticises Rhodes statue removal campaign

Former South African President FW De Klerk has criticised a campaign to remove a statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oxford University's Oriel College.
Mr De Klerk said South Africa's white Afrikaner population had many reasons to dislike Rhodes but "never thought of removing his name from our history".
Campaigners say the statue venerates the 19th Century colonialist and the values he stood for.
Former Australian PM Tony Abbott has also said the statue should stay.
Mr Abbott, a Rhodes Scholar, said removing the statue would "substitute moral vanity for fair-minded enquiry".
Read more: When is it right to remove a statue?
Upon his death, Cecil Rhodes, who attended Oriel College, left a legacy which has funded the university's prestigious Rhodes Scholarships - postgraduate awards for non-British students.
Mr De Klerk, in a letter to the Times newspaper, said that "for better or worse", Rhodes had made an impact on history, which included the positive contribution of his scholarship scheme.
"If the political correctness of today were applied consistently, very few of Oxford's great figures would pass scrutiny," he said.
He pointed out that Rhodes had been "the architect of the Anglo-Boer War that had a disastrous impact on our people, yet the National Party government never thought of removing his name from our history".
Mr De Klerk also criticised Oriel College's decision to consult on the future of the statue, and remove a plaque honouring Rhodes.
The college, he said, should be "a little more gracious in its treatment of its most generous benefactor" and suggested if his legacy was so "reprehensible" then it should consider returning Rhodes' bequest to the victims of British imperialism in South Africa, the Times reports.
The #RhodesMustFall movement began in South Africa, where students succeeded in having a statue of Rhodes removed from the University of Cape Town.
Students involved in the movement argue that Rhodes' involvement in apartheid and land seizures in 19th Century Africa make him unworthy of commemoration.
More than 2,300 people have signed a petition calling for the removal of the statue from Oriel College.
The movement includes amongst its members several current Rhodes Scholars.
There is also an internal movement of Rhodes Scholars called Redress Rhodes, which says it seeks to work with the Rhodes Trust to "honestly confront" Rhodes' legacy and ensure that more scholarships are awarded to students from African countries and former colonies.
Mr De Klerk, 79, was South Africa's last white president and shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela in 1993 for helping to bring an end to the apartheid system.
In a statement, the Rhodes Must Fall Oxford (RMFO) movement told the BBC it considered it "despicable that someone who claims to be an 'icon for reconciliation' uses apartheid's National Party as a model for how to deal with colonial symbols".
It added: "His comment that white Afrikaners 'have greater reason to dislike Rhodes than anyone else' embodies precisely the distortion and whitewashing of colonial history that we at RMFO are challenging."

Who was Cecil Rhodes?

  • Imperialist, businessman and politician who played a dominant role in southern Africa in the late 19th Century, driving the annexation of vast swathes of land
  • Born the son of a vicar in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, in 1853, first went to Africa at the age of 17; grew cotton with his brother in Natal, but moved into diamond mining, founding De Beers, which until recently controlled the global trade
  • Rhodes's bequest continues to finance scholarships bearing his name, allowing overseas students to come to Oxford University; most famous of these was probably Bill Clinton
  • Controversial even in his own time, Rhodes backed the disastrous Jameson Raid of 1895, in which a small British force tried to overthrow the gold-rich Transvaal Republic, helping prompt the Second Boer War, in which tens of thousands died

Iraqi forces have moved deeper into Ramadi, pressing an offensive to drive Islamic State militants from the city.
Bombs and booby traps have been slowing their advance, army officials say.
Troops and Sunni tribal fighters were about 500m (550 yards) from the main local government office.
They have taken control of several districts since launching the operation five days ago. The mainly Sunni Arab city, about 55 miles (90km) west of Baghdad, was captured by IS in May.
Its fall was seen as an embarrassing defeat for the army.
Iraqi officials say troops have managed to enter Haouz area - one of the most important IS strongholds in the centre of Ramadi that includes the main offices of the Anbar province administration and the police directorate.
Joint operations command spokesman Brig Yahya Rasool told Reuters news agency US-led coalition air strikes "helped detonate explosive devices and booby-trapped houses, facilitating our advance".
A police captain, Ahmed al-Dulaimi, spoke of "fierce battles" that had killed many IS militants.
At the launch of the operation on Tuesday, the Iraqi army said it expected up to 300 militants inside the city centre to be dislodged within days.
But there is concern for the civilians they have reportedly taken prisoner.
Sources in Ramadi said on Tuesday that the jihadists had carried out raids and mass arrests in an attempt to prevent an uprising in support of the government offensive by the thousands of people living in districts under their control.
The operation to recapture Ramadi, which began in early November, has made slow progress, mainly because the government has chosen not to use the powerful Shia-dominated paramilitary force that helped it regain the northern city of Tikrit to avoid increasing sectarian tensions.
IS has lost control of several key towns in Iraq to government and Kurdish forces since over-running large swathes of the country's west and north in June 2014 and proclaiming the creation of a "caliphate" that also extended into neighbouring Syria.

What is Islamic State?

A notoriously violent Islamist group which controls large parts of Syria and Iraq. It has declared its territory a caliphate - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law - under its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

What does it want?

IS demands allegiance from all Muslims, rejects national borders and seeks to expand its territory. It adheres to its own extreme interpretation of Sunni Islam and regards non-believers as deserving of death.

How strong is IS?

IS projects a powerful image, partly through propaganda and sheer brutality, and is the world's richest insurgent group. It has about 30,000 fighters but is facing daily bombing by a US-led multinational coalition which has vowed to destroy it.

Syria war: Yarmouk camp evacuation 'on hold'

The expected evacuation of thousands of rebels from in and around Yarmouk refugee camp in southern Damascus has been put on hold, reports say.
Safety issues and the killing of a top rebel have been blamed for the delay.
Militants and their families were due to be bussed to areas under the control of their respective groups, under a deal between rebels and the government.
About 18,000 civilians have been trapped in Yarmouk by the fighting and a government siege since 2012.
Islamic State (IS) militants took over parts of the camp earlier this year.
They were pushed back by Palestinian militias and Syrian rebels after weeks of fierce fighting, and Yarmouk has since been divided into areas controlled by IS, the rival al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, and pro- and anti-government Palestinian militants.
Government forces maintain checkpoints around the area preventing civilians from leaving.

Safe passage

Under the deal, fighters will withdraw from Yarmouk and the neighbouring districts of Hajar al-Aswad and al-Qadam.
Eighteen buses which will transport rebels and their families were reported to have arrived at the camp on Friday.
However, Lebanese Hezbollah al-Manar TV said the evacuation was held up because the convoy was due to pass through territory controlled by rebel group Jaysh al-Islam, whose leader was killed in an air strike later that day.
The UK-based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said it was paused for "logistic reasons" in order to secure the road to IS-held Raqqa in the north-east.
The plan would see IS fighters and their families given safe passage there, and al-Nusra militants transferred to the northern province of Idlib.
Once Yarmouk is made safe, the UN will be able to get aid to the civilians who have been trapped.
Yarmouk was first built for Palestinians fleeing the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Before the Syrian civil war began in 2011, it had more than 150,000 refugees living there.
Those trapped in the camp for the past two years, including 3,500 children, have no access to regular food supplies, clean water or healthcare.

Best of 2015: All the Most Show-Stopping Gowns to Hit the Red Carpet—See Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian & More! by Arielle Sacks Thu, Dec 17, 2015 4:00 PM

Let's get straight to it: Of all the fashionable things that 2015 will be recognized for, it's the naked dress that will go down in history forever.
This year the red carpet was full of show stopping moments, but all trends paled in comparison to the birthday suit-beauty effect. While it was Rhianna who first sent jaws crashing to the floor with her naked dress back in 2014 (yeah, you know the Adam Selman one), Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé turned up the trend to a whole 'nother level at the Met Gala.
Kim's Roberto Cavalli number hugged her curves in all the right places (even that teeny-tiny baby bump), with ample beading and a lengthy feathered train. Now Queen B—whew! Booty, boobs and (nearly) everything else was on full display in her barely-there Givenchy getup.
Although she's known to flaunt her curves in many a risqué design, Jennifer Lopez's real show-stopping moment this year came in the form of an elegant (yet still cleavage-clad) Elie Saab confection at the Oscars. With a plunging neckline, intricate beading and a full tulle skirt, this dress made for the perfect glam-gal moment.

And as a matter of fact, there were quite a few Elie Saab masterpieces on the red carpet this year, including Lily James' elegant beaded gown during her Cinderella press tour (you can thank her fairy godmother stylist, Rebecca Corbin-Murray). And let's not neglect Elizabeth Banks either, who created her own princess moment in a beaded, blood-red Elie Saab gown for the Berlinale International Film Festival.
Surprised to seeLupita Nyong'o on this roundup? Neither are we (in fact, it was hard to just pick one look for her!), 'cause this heavily beaded emerald Gucci look from Cannes is just to good. And during the same film festival, world-renowned fashionista Fan Bingbing lived up her reputation in this masterful Ralph & Russo Couture gown as well.
Meanwhile at the Venice Film Festival, Diane Kruger did her usual do-no-wrong styling act (she selects all of her own looks, FYI) with a regal caped Prada confection. And then there was Kate Hudson, who sported a super sexy, super plunging Versace halter at the Golden Globes.
Oh, and who could forget Naomie Harris' tangerine Stella McCartney gown from the Spectre press tour? Now, Naomie's never been a stranger to the fashion big wigs. But this look (plus the rest from the tour) solidified her all-star red carpet status.
Now pause and take a moment to relish all of these breathtaking red carpet looks—ahhh. Alas, we have one more item of business: Which of these looks is your favorite from 2015? Cast your vote below!

5 Days, 5 Ways: How to Wear Plaid Without Looking Like a Lumberjack

No matter the time of year, plaid can do you no wrong.
Whether you're channeling festive vibes, schoolgirl chic or garage grunge, the pattern attracts the eye in ways both minimalists and maximalists can appreciate.
For instance, take Victoria Beckham, proponent of all things chic, streamlined and neutral. In a refreshing move, Posh paired a long, plaid coat with bright bottoms for a crisp, boardroom-appropriate look. The trick to pulling off this outfit involves taking a subtle, accenting color in the plaid and finding a solid pant in a vibrant shade of the same hue.

Three press conference rants

Three football press conference rants after Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal stormed out of a media briefing on Wednesday.
Love it, Keegan
- Not strictly a press conference, but Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan's famous post-match TV rant at Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has gone down in Premier League folklore.
In the 1996/1996 season, as Newcastle's title challenge imploded, Keegan was furious at Ferguson's view that other teams weren't trying as hard against Newcastle as they were against the Old Trafford giants.
"When you do that with footballers like he said about Leeds, and when you do things like that about a man like Stuart Pearce...
"I've kept really quiet but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimations when he said that. We have not resorted to that. You can tell him now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something.
"And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it.
"But it really has got to me. I've voiced it live, not in front of the press or anywhere. I'm not even going to the press conference. But the battle is still on and Man United have not won this yet."
United won the title by four points.
Bird man Pearson
- Former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson accused a journalist of being "an ostrich" during a peculiar tirade following his side's 3-1 Premier League loss to Chelsea in April.
Ian Baker, who was covering the game for AFP, asked Pearson to elaborate after he told his post-match press conference that his players had had to deal with "criticism and negativity".
"Have you been on holiday for six months? Have you been away for six months?" responded Pearson.
"I think you must have either your head in the clouds, or been away on holiday, or reporting on a different team, because if you don't know the answer to that question... if you don't know the answer to that question then I think you are an ostrich.
"Your head must be in the sand. Is your head in the sand? Are you flexible enough to get your head in the sand? My suspicion would be no. I can, you can't."
