Rio Olympics 2016: Brazil beat Germany on penalties to win men's football gold

Neymar scored the winning penalty as hosts Brazil beat Germany 5-4 on penalties in Rio to win their first men's Olympic football gold medal.

The game finished 1-1 after extra time, with Neymar's first-half free-kick cancelled out by Max Meyer's strike.

In the shootout, Germany's Nils Petersen had his penalty saved by Weverton before Neymar won it.

It comes two years after Germany thrashed Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals in Belo Horizonte.

In front of 78,000 at the Maracana, Brazil got a measure of revenge as they finally won the Olympic title after losing in the finals in 1984, 1988 and 2012.

Barcelona forward Neymar, who missed the World Cup semi-final through injury, opened the scoring with a fine 25-yard free-kick, but the hosts were lucky to go in at half-time with the lead.

Germany hit the woodwork three times in the first half - through Julian Brandt's 25-yard effort, a deflection off a Brazilian defender and Sven Bender's header - before they scored a deserved equaliser shortly after the restart.

Bender passed to the overlapping Jeremy Toljan and he found the unmarked Meyer, who arrowed a low shot into the net.

Neither side could find a winner before the drama of the penalty shootout gave Brazil the gold.
Goalkeeper Weverton said: "The gold is ours, but it belongs to God. God loves Neymar like he loves all this team."

Neymar added: "This is one of the best things that has happened in my life. That's it."

Revenge for Brazil?

Two years ago, World Cup hosts and tournament favourites Brazil suffered their heaviest ever World Cup defeat as they fell 5-0 behind inside 29 minutes on their way to that 7-1 thrashing by the Germans.

Before the Olympic final, Brazil coach Rogerio Micale tried to play down talk of a "revenge" victory.

He pointed out that none of his players were involved in the World Cup semi-final - with the Olympic squads only able to feature three players aged older than 23.

"That was the World Cup, this is the Olympic team,'' said Micale. "Neymar never played in that match so there is nothing that could generate any type of feeling that we have to take revenge.

"It is a different time with different players and ages."

Nevertheless, the capacity crowd created a fantastic atmosphere in the Maracana and got the result they desperately craved.

Rio Olympics 2016: Great Britain's Mo Farah wins 5,000m & 10,000m 'double double'

Great Britain's Mo Farah won his fourth Olympic gold medal as he became only the second man in history to retain the 5,000m and 10,000m titles.

The 33-year-old won Saturday's 5,000m final in Rio to extend his tally as Britain's most successful Olympic track and field athlete of all time.

Farah won in 13 minutes 3.30 seconds as Scot Andrew Butchart finished fourth.

"It shows I didn't just fluke it in London. To do it again is incredible. I can't believe it," said Farah.

Farah's was GB's 27th gold in Rio and their 65th medal, matching the haul at London 2012.

They surpassed that tally when the women's 4x400m relay team won bronze shortly after.

More history for Mo

Farah cemented his place as one of Britain's greatest athletes with his double success four years ago, but repeating the feat makes him the world's most successful distance runner in terms of major medals.

The Somalia-born Londoner is now a nine-time global champion, moving him above Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele, after his second victory in Rio's Olympic Stadium.

He also matched the feat of Finland's Lasse Viren, who completed the long-distance double at the Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976 Olympics.

Farah had already achieved the World Championships 'double double', successfully defending his 10,000m and 5,000m titles in Beijing last year.

"My legs were a bit tired after the 10k. I don't now how I recovered," he told BBC Sport.

How the race was won

Ethiopians Dejen Gebremeske and Hagos Gebrhiwet took turns to set a quick pace in the first half of the race.

Farah moved to the front shortly after the 3,000m mark, taking control of the pace before accelerating to hold on in the final straight.

"I was surprised by the first lap; I thought it was going to be a slow race," said Farah.

"They had a plan - they wanted to take the sting out of me. But when I hit the front, I wasn't letting anyone past me."

Farah finished 0.6secs clear of American Paul Kipkemoi Chelimo, who was disqualified along with fourth-placed Muktar Edris of Ethiopia and Canada's Mohammed Ahmed in fifth.

Gebrhiwet, who crossed the line in third, won silver, and Bernard Lagat of the United States was promoted from sixth place to bronze.

The disqualifications pushed Butchart, who ran a personal best of 13:08.61, up to fourth.

Analysis

Brendan Foster, Olympic medallist and BBC athletics commentator:

"What a moment. What a fantastic performance. What a privilege to see this man collect a fourth Olympic medal in style. He did it the only way he knows how.

"Mo, you are a treasure. You are more than a national treasure. You are the greatest we have ever had and one of the greatest distance runners we have ever seen."

Is Jordan Rodgers the Most Scandalous 'Bachelorette' Winner Ever? Breaking Down the Controversies

Jordan Rodgers may have won the heart of season 12 Bachelorette star JoJo Fletcher, but clearly, not everyone is a fan.

The 27-year-old former football player has caused controversy since the start of the season, thanks to his famous brother -- 32-year-old Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers -- and rumors that he and JoJo already knew each other before the show began filming. When ET talked to JoJo in May, she admitted she was aware that Jordan was one of her suitors before the actual competition -- and that she knew of his famous family ties -- though she insisted that the knowledge didn't influence her thoughts about him in any way.

"Before I met him ... I knew just that tidbit about him, but nothing else, and I don't think it made a difference either way," she told ET. "I don't follow football closely, so it's not like it made a huge difference, but I definitely knew that about him going into it."

Since then, Jordan has continuously divided fans thanks to his very public drama with his ex-girlfriend, his estranged relationship with Aaron, and reports that he may have only entered the competition for fame. ET has reached out to ABC, and Jordan's rep says he isn't commenting.

Let's break down his three biggest controversies.

1. He's been accused of cheating

Fans began questioning Jordan's intentions with JoJo from the get-go when his ex, trainer Brittany Farrar, called him out in May on the night of the season premiere. Brittany slammed Jordan on Instagram, accusing him of cheating and wanting to be on the show to be famous. Rodgers has steadfastly denied the allegations.

"Riding the bench doesn't get in the way of a relationship, but cheating does. #yourpitchisntperfect @jrodgers11 #alwayswantedtobefamous #dreamscometrue #tuneinnextweekformoreBS," Brittany wroteAnd she didn't stop there. On Thursday -- well after Jordan proposed to JoJo in the season finale -- she once again took to Instagram to slam him, this time attempting to back up her cheating allegations with some receipts. Brittany posted a video showing a purchase order for a large bouquet of roses allegedly purchased by Jordan for "the girl he cheated on me with in Louisiana," she wrote. According to Brittany, Jordan met the woman she claims he had an affair with while shooting a scene in Pitch Perfect 2.

Brittany later posted a lengthy statement explaining why she's decided to go so public with her allegations.

"After our breakup, I was surprised to find out what a prolific liar and cheater #JordanRodgers was during our entire 3 1/2 year-relationship," Farrar wrote in the caption. "But what has surprised me even more is how he has carelessly bashed and lied about me in public. I guess he thought I wouldn't stand up for myself. #HeWasWrong."

To add to the drama, Brittany appears to be close friends with Aaron's girlfriend, actress Olivia Munn.

Nick Cannon Tells Amber Rose He's Still 'Broken' Over Mariah Carey Divorce, Says Their Sex Was a 'Dream Come True'

It's been nearly two years since the two called it quits, but during his guest appearance on The Amber Rose Show on Friday, the comedian admitted he's still not completely over the heartbreaking split.

"We talking about breakups?" Cannon, 35, joked. "Aww, damn."

"The world has seen it!" Cannon continued when host Amber Rose asked him to discuss his worst breakup story.

"I'm not ready to be in a relationship," he later added. "I'm broken."

Cannon revealed, however, that despite their split, he and Carey, who is now engaged to Australian billionaire James Packer, are "absolutely" still cool.

"I speak to her every single day," he explained. "Matter of fact, I gotta leave here and go pick up the kids [5-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe]."

Rose, who shares 3-year-old son Sebastian with her ex-husband, rapper Wiz Khalifa, then chimed in on co-parenting, saying, "I don't know why people out there, they feel like it's so taboo. Me and Wiz are best friends. We hang out, we spend time with the baby."

Cannon said it's called "being mature," and praised Rose and Carey for being wonderful mothers.

"Amber is an amazing mother, so is Mariah, and when you see these women who have their own industries, their own empire, but they're the best mothers ever," he gushed. "They put everything off to the side, so even if a breakup occurs, that doesn't mean a child should suffer. If anything, the child should be lifted up during that time."

"You guys do it so well," he continued. "They gotta grow up in this, they didn't ask for this. Not only do they have to be in the public light, but then they have to deal with an unorthodox household so, we just, you know, make sure that they're happy and they understand unconditional love."

All seriousness aside, Rose switched gears by asking Cannon if he and Carey ever had sex to one of her songs.

"I've answered this question while I was married," he replied. "Mistake! Yes, I have. And she didn't like the fact that I told the world that we had sex to her music, but it was true. I keep it a hundred! That's amazing, [can] you imagine having sex with Mariah Carey while Mariah Carey is playing in the background? That is a dream come true."

"Sorry, Mariah, I said I wasn't going to say that again but it's Amber's fault," he continued, also telling viewers the song of choice was "Hero," naturally. "'When a hero comes along,' just sayin' -- she wrote it."

Perhaps he'll find a new hero at Howard University?

Lou Pearlman, Disgraced Backstreet Boys Impresario, Dies at 62

AP PHOTO/JOHN RAOUX
Lou Pearlman, the disgraced impresario behind the Backstreet Boys and 'NSYNC who was serving out a 25-year prison term after being convicted of running a half-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme in 2008, died Friday night, multiple sources confirm to Billboard. He was 62.

On the back of those boy bands’ success, Pearlman turned his Trans Continental businesses into a sprawling empire in the 1990s. But it was all built on fraud, and he was ultimately sued by every act he represented except one.

His groups dominated the charts during the 1990s: Backstreet Boys landed six Top 10 singles in the Hot 100 and a whopping nine albums in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, with both Millennium and Black & White hitting No. 1 (albeit after the group split from Pearlman). NSYNC had six Top 10 singles on the Hot 100 and landed four albums in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, although the two of them that reached No. 1 -- No Strings Attached and Celebrity -- were both released after the split. His next most popular act, O-Town, had a single and an album in the Top 10.

Lou Pearlman Clings to His Boy-Band Dreams: The First Prison Interview

But both before and after his fall, rumors were rampant about Pearlman’s relationships with some of the male groups on his roster. "We would hear things, for sure," NSYNC's Lance Bass told The Hollywood Reporter in 2014. "He would always have young boy limo drivers for Trans Continental Records. Those limo drivers would always be put into different boy bands. Then I'd hear rumors that he would molest the boys before they would even get into the groups. I don't know how much of that is true, but to me, where there's smoke, there's fire." Pearlman denied any inappropriate relations.

Louis Jay Pearlman was born in Flushing, N.Y., in 1954, the only child of a Jewish dry-cleaner owner named Hy and his homemaker wife.

His first cousin was Art Garfunkel. The curly-haired member of folk singing sensation Simon & Garfunkel attended Pearlman's bar mitzvah in June 1967, giving him an early taste of music stardom.

Pearlman got his entrepreneurial start in the late 1970s, after graduating from Queens College with a degree in accounting, by founding a helicopter taxi service in New York City. He later moved into blimp leasing. After the maiden voyage of the newly minted Airship International crashed in New Jersey in 1980, Pearlman aligned himself with a penny-stock operation. An initial public offering in 1985 for Airship International (ticker symbol: BLMP) raised $3 million in a widely suspected "pump and dump" scheme. By 1989, he was traveling in a private jet and had relocated to temperate Orlando.

All the while, Pearlman quietly was convincing would-be investors to get in on the ground floor of a flourishing -- and fallacious -- fleet of planes. Trans Continental would become the cornerstone of Pearlman's Ponzi scheme of 84 businesses of varying degrees of legitimacy, in which investors contributed to the company's Employee Investment Savings Accounts (EISA) program.

After a string of blimp accidents in the early '90s, Pearlman soured on the airship business, remembering the time he chartered a plane in the late 1980s for money-minting New Kids on the Block. He placed a classified ad for teen male vocalists in the Orlando Sentinel in 1992 and fondly recalls "the days when we had the auditioning process, when we put it all together, trying to get a record deal,” Pearlman told The Hollywood Reporter.

Backstreet Boys were not an overnight hit, but Pearlman proceeded to sink millions into the group, assigning management duties to Johnny Wright and wife Donna. Success came with the 1997 hit "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)," which helped fuel album sales of ultimately 14 million copies. They repeated the formula with NSYNC, and Pearlman proceeded to build his Trans Continental entertainment empire based in Orlando, Fla., containing a

Earlier this year, a glut of avid Kanye West fans marched to SoHo in New York to satisfy their insatiable need for The Life of Pablo merchandise. While some hypebeasts were able to go "H.A.M" and cop merch, others haplessly waited on a lengthy line just to get in. The burgundy shirts emblazoned with 'Ye’s succinct “I Feel Like Pablo” tagline owned the springtime.

Kanye West Opening 21 Pablo Merch Pop-Up Shops Around the World This Weekend

Fast forward to the summer, and the opening night (Aug. 19) of Yeezy’s global Pablo pop-up takeover -- the rapper announced he would launch 21 shops around the world earlier this week -- had the streets of New York in a frenzy. This time around, The Supermarket in Tribeca served as West's proverbial home for everything Pablo. The sweltering heat didn’t stop zealous middle-school kids and fashion junkies from forming a snake-like line, which wrapped around the block since the wee hours of the morning. Fans downed countless bottles of water supplied by The Supermarket to stay hydrated while they waited to be escorted inside the store.

In Kanye fashion, The Supermarket appeared almost incognito from the outside compared to its neighbors Chipotle, Levis, and Empire. Inside, white walls were lined with racks of white and black Pablo shirts inscribed with gold gothic lettering, courtesy of artist Cali Thornhill, the man responsible for the design of the original “I Feel Like Pablo” shirts.
