How a Victoria's Secret Angel Gets Her Wings Model Sara Sampaio and wingmaker Julie Wilkinson give us a behind-the-scenes look at some of this year's splashiest wings.

What makes a Victoria's Secret Angel an Angel? Ask Adriana Lima, Tyra Banks, Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, or any other members (or notable alumnae) of Victoria's Secret's famous flock and they'll tell you: The wings. For nearly two decades we've seen hosts of glittery, feathery, and truly show-stopping wings make their way down the runway on the backs of the lingerie brand's models. This year, with the brand celebrating its 20th anniversary, we're expecting to see some of the biggest, brightest, and most amazing apparatuses yet.
Last month, with weeks to go before tomorrow's big runway, we visited The Makerie designers Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscroft, who were tapped to create five of the wings for this year's show. At their studio we got to see what really goes into creating an iconic pair of Angel wings. Spoiler: Time, some physics work, and a whole lot of glitter.
Here, Julie Wilkinson answers all our questions about the Angel accessories and gives us a sneak peek at a few of the wings that will appear on tomorrow's runway. Plus, Sara Sampaio gives us a look inside her fitting of one of the Makerie wings—which could more accurately be described as rocket launchers—and tells us what's going through her head (and what will be going into her mouth) in the lead up to the big show!
